Well in line with Bel’s commitments, Babybel® aleady ensures a Zero Deforestation certified sourcing on paper and cardboard packaging and plans to reach 100% of recyclable-ready and/or biodegradable packaging by 2025.In Babybel®’s packaging, we keep the weight and amount of packaging to an absolute minimum and every piece of packaging has a very clear role. But at Babybel® we keep on challenging ourselves and we have been initiating many projects with our research and innovation teams for years to keep on reducing the amount of packaging and offering more and more sustainable solutions.

The red wax  is part of its DNA and brings a unique consumption experience. It prevents desiccation or molds and helps preserving the cheese in proper hygienic conditions until consumption.

Our cellophane wrapping completes the cheese protection. It prevents the wax from shock damages and sticking.

Our net is made from polyethylene ; which is a recyclable material, but due to its very light weight and shape, it actually depends on the recycling facilities and its capacity to select small pieces of plastics to recycle them.

What is TerraCycle®?

TerraCycle® is a recycling company, renowned for finding ways to recycle even the most hard-to-recycle waste.

Why have Babybel UK partnered with TerraCycle®?

As Babybel packaging is not yet widely recyclable, it can’t be placed in your recycling bin at home so needs to be recycled in a special way, which is where our recycling partner TerraCycle® comes in. What happens to the recycled packaging?

After being collected and sent by consumers, parcels of waste are received in TerraCycle®’s local warehouse to be checked in, controlled for compliance and weighed. The wax is melted and filtered to take out any impurities and is then used for new product applications such as candles. The net bags, labels, flexible plastic packaging, wrappers, sleeves and plastic trays are shredded, washed and then pelletized. These pellets can then be moulded into new rigid products. The metal clasps are separated from the plastics, baled and sent for smelting. They can then be used for new product applications such as washers or rings.
